    Turbofan forced mixer lobe flow modeling. Part 3: Application to augment engines

    Military engines frequently need large quantities of thrust for short periods of time. The addition of an augmentor can provide such thrust increases but with a penalty of increased duct length and engine weight. The addition of a forced mixer to the augmentor improves performance and reduces the penalty, as well as providing a method for siting the required flame holders. In this report two augmentor concepts are investigated: a swirl-mixer augmentor and a mixer-flameholder augmentor. Several designs for each concept are included and an experimental assessment of one of the swirl-mixer augmentors is presented

    INTRODUCTION: Interventions that make extensive use of theory tend to have larger effects on behaviour. The Intervention Mapping (IM) framework incorporates theory into intervention design, implementation and evaluation, and was applied to the development of a community-based childhood obesity prevention intervention for a multi-ethnic population. METHODS: IM was applied as follows: 1) Needs assessment of the community and culture; consideration of evidence-base, policy and practice; 2) Identification of desired outcomes and change objectives following identification of barriers to behaviour change mapped alongside psychological determinants (e.g. knowledge, self-efficacy, intention); 3) Selection of theory-based methods and practical applications to address barriers to behaviour change (e.g., strategies for responsive feeding); 4) Design of the intervention by developing evidence-based interactive activities and resources (e.g., visual aids to show babies stomach size). The activities were integrated into an existing parenting programme; 5) Adoption and implementation: parenting practitioners were trained by healthcare professionals to deliver the programme within Children Centres. RESULTS: HAPPY (Healthy and Active Parenting Programme for Early Years) is aimed at overweight and obese pregnant women (BMI > 25); consists of 12 × 2.5 hr. sessions (6 ante-natal from 24 weeks; 6 postnatal up to 9 months); it addresses mother's diet and physical activity, breast or bottle feeding, infant diet and parental feeding practices, and infant physical activity. CONCLUSION: We have demonstrated that IM is a feasible and helpful method for providing an evidence based and theoretical structure to a complex health behaviour change intervention. The next stage will be to assess the impact of the intervention on behaviour change and clinical factors associated with childhood obesity. The HAPPY programme is currently being tested as part of a randomised controlled feasibility trial

    Comment on Mie Scattering from a Sonoluminescing Bubble with High Spatial and Temporal Resolution [Physical Review E 61, 5253 (2000)]

    A key parameter underlying the existence of sonoluminescence (SL)is the time relative to SL at which acoustic energy is radiated from the collapsed bubble. Light scattering is one route to this quantity. We disagree with the statement of Gompf and Pecha that -highly compressed water causes the minimum in scattered light to occur 700ps before SL- and that this effect leads to an overestimate of the bubble wall velocity. We discuss potential artifacts in their experimental arrangement and correct their description of previous experiments on Mie scattering.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    Phase structure and monopoles in U(1) gauge theory

    We investigate the phase structure of pure compact U(1) lattice gauge theory in 4 dimensions with the Wilson action supplemented by a monopole term. To overcome the suppression of transitions between the phases in the simulations we make the monopole coupling a dynamical variable. We determine the phase diagram and find that the strength of the first order transition decreases with increasing weight of the monopole term, the transition thus ultimately getting of second order. After outlining the appropriate topological characterization of networks of currents lines, we present an analysis of the occurring monopole currents which shows that the phases are related to topological properties.Comment: 22 pages (latex), 14 figures (available upon request), BU-HEP 94-

    Critical behaviour of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. A complete analysis with the χ2\chi^2-method

    We determine the critical point and the ratios β/ν\beta/\nu and γ/ν\gamma/\nu of critical exponents of the deconfinement transition in SU(2)SU(2) gauge theory by applying the χ2\chi^2-method to Monte Carlo data of the modulus and the square of the Polyakov loop. With the same technique we find from the Binder cumulant grg_r its universal value at the critical point in the thermodynamical limit to 1.403(16)-1.403(16) and for the next-to-leading exponent ω=1±0.1\omega=1\pm0.1. From the derivatives of the Polyakov loop dependent quantities we estimate then 1/ν1/\nu. The result from the derivative of grg_r is 1/ν=0.63±0.011/\nu=0.63\pm0.01, in complete agreement with that of the 3d3d Ising model.Comment: 11 pages, 3 Postscript figures, uses Plain Te

    The Logarithmic Triviality of Compact QED Coupled to a Four Fermi Interaction

    This is the completion of an exploratory study of Compact lattice Quantum Electrodynamics with a weak four-fermi interaction and four species of massless fermions. In this formulation of Quantum Electrodynamics massless fermions can be simulated directly and Finite Size Scaling analyses can be performed at the theory's chiral symmetry breaking critical point. High statistics simulations on lattices ranging from 848^4 to 24424^4 yield the equation of state, critical indices, scaling functions and cumulants. The measurements are well fit with the orthodox hypothesis that the theory is logarithmically trivial and its continuum limit suffers from Landau's zero charge problem.Comment: 27 pages, 15 figues and 10 table

    The critical current of YBa2Cu3O7-d Low Angle Grain Boundaries

    Transport critical current measurements have been performed on 5 degree [001]-tilt thin film YBa2Cu3O7-delta single grain boundaries with magnetic field rotated in the plane of the film, phi. The variation of the critical current has been determined as a function of the angle between the magnetic field and the grain boundary plane. In applied fields above 1 T the critical current, j_c, is found to be strongly suppressed only when the magnetic field is within an angle phi_k of the grain boundary. Outside this angular range the behavior of the artificial grain boundary is dominated by the critical current of the grains. We show that the phi dependence of j_c in the suppressed region is well described by a flux cutting model.Comment: To be published in PRL, new version with minor changes following referees report

    Gauge Theories with Cayley-Klein SO(2;j)SO(2;j) and SO(3;j)SO(3;j) Gauge Groups

    Gauge theories with the orthogonal Cayley-Klein gauge groups SO(2;j)SO(2;j) and SO(3;j)SO(3;{\bf j}) are regarded. For nilpotent values of the contraction parameters j{\bf j} these groups are isomorphic to the non-semisimple Euclid, Newton, Galilei groups and corresponding matter spaces are fiber spaces with degenerate metrics. It is shown that the contracted gauge field theories describe the same set of fields and particle mass as SO(2),SO(3)SO(2), SO(3) gauge theories, if Lagrangians in the base and in the fibers all are taken into account. Such theories based on non-semisimple contracted group provide more simple field interactions as compared with the initial ones.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
